Does this test cover all existing Dog Breeds?

The Dog Breed Identification Test was developed using purebred dogs, primarily from the registry lists of The Kennel Club, the American Kennel Club, and other major breed registries. You can view the full list of dog breeds tested HERE.

Please note:
If your dog was imported from a country outside the United Kingdom, mainland United States, Canada, Australia, or Western Europe, or if you believe their ancestors are from regions such as Eastern Europe, Greece, or the Middle East, the breed ancestry may not be fully represented in the current database. This is because the genetic markers used may not align closely with those of breeds native to those regions, which could impact the accuracy of your test results.

Important note re Pitbull Breeds

The term “pit bull” does not refer to a single recognized breed but rather to a group of genetically diverse breeds that share similar physical traits. These dogs were historically bred by combining guard-type breeds with terriers to achieve specific characteristics. As a result, they often retain genetic similarities to their original and closely related breeds.

Due to this genetic diversity, it is not possible for the laboratory to build a specific DNA profile that can identify all dogs visually classified as pit bull-type. When tested, these dogs often show a mix of component purebreds, including:

  • American Staffordshire Terrier

  • Boston Terrier

  • Bull Terrier

  • Staffordshire Bull Terrier

  • Mastiff

  • Bullmastiff

  • Boxer

  • Bulldog

  • Other terriers and guard breeds

Additionally, other unrelated breeds may appear in the DNA results based on each dog’s unique ancestry.

It’s important to note that some regions have restrictions on pit bull ownership. The laboratory encourages all dog owners to be aware of local laws and regulations regarding breed-specific legislation before pursuing DNA testing.
