Feline PKD Testing

$74

Forensics Canada offers feline PKD testing, a simple DNA test that can help save a cat’s life and ensure future litters are free from this serious condition. Persian cats and Exotic Shorthairs are among the breeds most at risk for polycystic kidney disease (PKD), an inherited disorder. Early detection through genetic testing allows for better health management and responsible breeding decisions.

About Polycystic Kidney Disease testing (PKD)

PKD is a serious, potentially fatal condition most commonly found in Persian cats. It leads to the formation of fluid-filled cysts on the kidneys, causing abdominal pain, swelling, and eventually kidney failure. Because of the large number of cysts involved, treatment is often not possible, and in severe cases, euthanasia may be recommended to prevent further suffering.

The PKD DNA Test, available from just $74, is the most effective way to detect the gene responsible for this disease. Results are available within 10 working days from the time the samples are received at the laboratory.

Since PKD is caused by a dominant gene, only one parent carrying the gene is enough for kittens to be affected. In such litters, around 50% of the kittens may develop the disease. Tragically, because symptoms often appear later in life, many cats pass the gene on before signs become visible.

DNA testing is the only reliable method of preventing PKD from being inherited. By identifying cats that do not carry the gene, breeders and cat owners can make informed decisions and avoid passing on this painful and life-threatening condition.

If you’re planning to breed or adopt a Persian or related breed, this test offers peace of mind and a step toward responsible pet ownership.

Why carry out a PKD DNA test?

Your cat’s health and wellbeing are extremely important. Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) can be difficult to detect, especially in its early stages. While ultrasound can reveal cysts in older cats, it may not be effective for younger cats, as the cysts are often too small to be seen.

A PKD DNA test offers a major advantage. It can detect whether your cat carries the gene responsible for the disease even before any symptoms appear. This early insight is invaluable and can help you take proactive steps to protect your cat’s health.

As a breeder, this test allows you to exclude cats carrying the PKD gene from mating, ensuring that future litters are free from the disease.

As a buyer, testing a cat before purchase can give you peace of mind that the animal is free of the genetic mutation linked to PKD.

The information gained from a PKD DNA test can make a lasting difference in your cat’s quality of life and in the future health of the breed.

It really is so simple

Once you have confirmed your order, Forensics Canada will send you a sample collection kit. Using this kit, you can easily collect a DNA sample from your cat by gently rubbing a swab inside its mouth, then allowing the swabs to dry. Clear instructions will be provided to guide you through the process.

Our PKD DNA test can be performed on cats of any age. However, if you are testing nursing kittens, they should be separated from the mother for at least 30 minutes before collecting their samples to avoid contamination.

Your test results will be ready within 10 working days from the time the samples are received at our laboratory.
