Grandparent DNA Test
$399
Are You the Grandparents of Your Grandchild(ren)?
A grandparentage DNA test can accurately confirm whether grandparents (both grandmother and grandfather) are biologically related to their grandchild or grandchildren. By testing samples from the grandparents and grandchild, this test provides clear and reliable results regarding the biological connection.
About grandparent DNA testing
A grandparentage DNA test from Forensics Canada is helpful when grandparents question whether a child is biologically related to them. This type of testing is especially useful if the alleged father is unavailable. In such cases, the father’s parents can be tested to determine if they are the child’s biological grandparents. The cost of the grandparentage DNA test is $399.
Types of grandparent testing
Duo Grandparent DNA Analysis: This test involves DNA samples from both the grandfather and grandmother. Testing both paternal grandparents allows for the partial reconstruction of the alleged father’s DNA profile. Including the child’s mother’s DNA sample can further improve the accuracy of the results.
Single Grandparent DNA Analysis: This test is performed when only one grandparent is available, but it rarely provides a conclusive outcome. For this reason, Forensics Canada recommends grandparentage testing only when both grandparents are available. If only one grandparent can be tested, we encourage you to contact us to explore alternative testing options.
Important Notes
Test results are intended to provide a statistical likelihood that gives evidence to support the tested relationship in question. Including additional individuals for testing, such as a known parent, can help strengthen the results and improve accuracy. In some cases, direct relationship testing may also offer more definitive evidence.
We can only guarantee standard result turnaround time when testing is done using oral swab samples. Using a discreet sample may increase the turnaround time.
We strongly suggest including the sample of a known parent to provide stronger results.
Y chromosome testing
If the test participants are both male (such as a grandfather and grandson), Forensics Canada recommends a Y chromosome test. This type of test can determine whether the individuals share the same paternal lineage. You can read more about Y chromosome testing for additional details.
