The same testing can also assist parents looking to locate a child they placed for adoption.
- DNA immigration testing is now a common requirement in many citizenship and visa applications. These tests are recognized by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and various other national immigration authorities.
- For situations requiring legally admissible proof of a biological relationship—such as for court or official purposes—Forensics Canada also offers legal DNA testing for all types of relationships, including both maternity and paternity.
Collecting samples for your maternity test
Samples for a maternity test can be collected using our home sample collection kit when the test is for peace of mind purposes. For legal or immigration cases, Forensics Canada will provide a special legal kit, which will be sent to your chosen sampler. You’ll need to arrange a sampler and share their address with us.
Each kit includes everything required to collect the samples, including color-coded swabs for the mother and child, detailed instructions, and consent forms. Samples are collected using oral swabs. Once collected, the swabs—along with the completed consent forms—must be returned to our laboratory for analysis.
Maternity test results are typically available within 3 to 5 working days after the samples reach the lab.
Note: Standard turnaround times are only guaranteed when oral swab samples are used. Submitting a discreet sample may extend processing time. Express testing is not available with discreet samples and can only be offered when using mouth swabs.
