Flexible
Males do not pass the mitochondrial DNA (X-SV) they inherit from their mother to their children—only females pass it on to their offspring. It’s important to understand that an mtDNA test does not specify the exact nature of the relationship between participants (such as aunt and nephew or grandmother and granddaughter); it only confirms whether individuals share a common maternal lineage. Despite this limitation, the test is extremely accurate and delivers highly reliable results.

MtDNA testing can only be used to confirm a shared maternal lineage—it does not provide any information about paternal ancestry.
